Severe storms with damaging winds, tornadoes possible Tuesday: What we know

Tuesday will be one of those days to remain weather aware across the Miami Valley with a strong weather system that will bring two rounds of rain and storms to the area.

Round one arrives early in the morning. Round two, which has the potential to bring severe weather, arrives during the afternoon hours.

TIMING: Round one of rain and rumbles of thunder will move through the Miami Valley from around 4 a.m. until around 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning. While this round of weather will bring widespread rain and some embedded thunderstorms to the region, severe weather is not expected.

After mid-morning, a break in the action is likely. A second round of storms is possible between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. The coverage with these storms won’t be as widespread as the morning round, but will likely be more intense.

THREATS: All severe weather hazards may be in play on Tuesday. Damaging winds will be the greatest threat, but hail and a tornado or two cannot be ruled out.

UNCERTAINTIES: How late into the morning will rain and clouds from round one linger around? This will be an important part of the forecast. A faster clearing of our skies tomorrow morning will allow our atmosphere more time to recharge to support strong thunderstorms during the afternoon. Rain and clouds not exiting as quickly will lead to an overall more stable atmosphere during the afternoon, which would then be less conducive for severe weather.

STAY WEATHER AWARE: At this time, it appears Tuesday afternoon’s storms may be developing over the Miami Valley rather than moving in from the west. This means conditions could change rapidly early tomorrow afternoon, despite not necessarily having a line of storms march in from Indiana.
